Equestrian Families Help Preserve the History of the Hunter/Jumper Sport. Lexington, KY- August 1. On the heels of a week of championships in a sport that celebrates tradition, the USHJA Foundation is pleased to recognize and thank Dr. Kenneth and Selma Garber, the Hallman Family and Merrylegs South, the Oberkircher Family, and Jennifer and Roger Smith who recently became the first four founding members of the USHJA Foundation's Legacy Circle. The initial five members of the Legacy Circle have the honored distinction of being known as the Founding Five of the Legacy Circle. Donations to the Legacy Circle will enable enhanced production and installation of rotating exhibits to educate and share with Kentucky Horse Park visitors the wonderful history of the hunter and jumper disciplines, and to bring awareness to our sport; will help us restore and digitize hours of rare and irreplaceable film footage so that it can be viewed and enjoyed for years to come; allow us to develop a viewing platform and library where these rare and historic video files can be readily accessed by interested viewers; and help us develop a dedicated website that offers not only online playback of archived film footage, but also digital museum exhibits. Specifically, the Foundation, a supporting organization to the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA), offers financial assistance to hunter/jumper equestrians in need, unique educational opportunities for hunter/jumper equestrians who face adversity, support for educational grants and scholarships for hunter/jumper equestrians, and preservation of our sport's history through funding of the Wheeler Museum. Luckily, I had a paramedic who was up on spinal treatment, as it is not standard protocol for California paramedics. The paramedics called for a medevac helicopter. The hospital is a relatively new Level Two trauma unit in the Coachella Valley with a team of neurosurgeons who specialize in spinal cord injuries. I also destroyed my disc between C3 and 4, and fractured L1. The paralysis came from the fractured C vertebrae, however the spinal cord injury was . After the procedures, my surgeon felt I had a 9. I took that ball and ran with it! However, during that time I had a steady stream of visitors, both from home and from the horse show. The show grounds were 4. I was amazed at how many people came, brought me food, fed me (my hands still didn't work yet) kept me posted on the horse show and just made me laugh! I was transferred to an acute rehab center, the Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in San Pedro, CA. She pushed to get me in. I had no idea what to expect, but right off the staff was welcoming and wonderfully helpful and supportive. They made me realize that everything they asked of me to do - I could do. My Sundays were filled from morning until evening with visitors who brought me goodies and laughter. I make sure at the end of the day there are no . At four- and- a- half months, I can swim and tread water, walk one- third of a mile, ride at the walk for 3. I have been to four horse shows where I instructed my riders and it just keeps getting better each day! The Mission of Chicago Equestrians for a Cause is to showcase high- level equestrian events with the express purpose of raising funds for selected charitable institutions in the Chicago area. The group is planning to grow to include members from local stables to reach out to a more regional area. The proceeds for the event will benefit three charities this year; Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, The United Stated Hunter Jumper Association Foundation, and the University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is one of Chicago’s most precious civic assets. As Illinois’ only freestanding hospital exclusively for children, the hospital is consistently recognized as one of the top pediatric institutions in North America, and many of its physicians and researchers are among the world’s top experts in their areas of specialty. In today’s challenging health care environment, the hospital relies on philanthropic support to help ensure that all children have access to the highest quality care.
